Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) announced that the firm continues to grow its practices in the Middle East with the appointment of Neil Hayward as Managing Director and head of the region’s Restructuring and Turnaround team. Hayward brings 18 years of experience in restructuring services to his new role and was recently named among the top 20 of Global Restructuring Review’s list of “The New Insolvency Advisers.”
Hayward has advised boards, management teams, banks, bondholders and governments in relation to turnaround or distressed situations. He has advised on projects in the U.S., U.K., Russia, Canada, Germany, France, Spain, Sweden, Norway and the Middle East, across a range of sectors including oil and gas, financial services, food manufacturing, manufacturing, construction and real estate, and retail.
His most recent advisory experience in the Middle East involved a secondment to the Government of Dubai, assisting with the Dubai World and Nakheel restructurings and counselling the financiers in the successful Amlak and Al Jaber restructurings. Hayward is a Certified Insolvency Restructuring Advisor (CIRA). Additionally, he holds the ACA (Chartered Accountant qualification) as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). He earned a Master’s Degree in engineering and a degree in French from the University of Nottingham, including a year at the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Toulouse (INSA Toulouse).
A&M also announced the continued expansion of its Insurance and Risk Advisory Services practice with the addition of John Spencer, who joined as a Managing Director in New York. Spencer’s appointment bolsters A&M’s ability to advise clients on complex pension and corporate finance issues, Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) inquiries, human capital risk matters, labor negotiations and capital markets transactions. Spencer brings more than 20 years of experience counseling businesses across industries including financial services, transportation, retail and manufacturing.
He spent 15 years at the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation as the Head of Corporate Finance and Director of the Division of Insurance Supervision and Compliance. In these roles, he managed the financial analysts, actuaries and attorneys who were responsible for overseeing the nearly 26,000 private sector, single-employer U.S. defined benefit pension plans. Spencer is an expert in the area of pension financial advisory. Additionally, he is a recognized subject matter expert in Title IV of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA), specifically as it pertains to assessment of risk in the context of corporate transactions and distressed situations. Spencer earned a Bachelor’s Degree in economics from the University of Maryland and has completed certificate programs at Harvard Business School and The Kennedy School for Government.
