On May 25, 2017, S&P Global Ratings lowered its issuer credit rating on GenOn Energy, Inc. to CC from CCC- and its secured and unsecured debt to CCC and CCC-, respectively, from CCC+ and CCC. According to S&P Global, the downgrade stems from a recent filing made by the issuer that indicated that GenOn was pursuing an exchange with existing debtholders. “The negative outlook reflects our expectation of a near-term event of default, either via a distressed exchange or through a voluntary bankruptcy filing,” said S&P Global Ratings credit analyst Michael Ferguson.
