Bryan Cave announced its deep sadness over the sudden passing of Partner Mark Stingley. Stingley joined Bryan Cave in 1995 as a Partner in the Kansas City office and has been the global head of Bryan Cave’s Bankruptcy, Restructuring & Creditors’ Rights Client Service Group for several years. Deeply involved with advancing bankruptcy law at the local and national level, Stingley had a distinguished career as a bankruptcy attorney and was a proud Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy.

He was Co-Chairman of the American College of Bankruptcy’s Eighth Circuit Fellows Education Committee and a member of the Eighth Circuit Admission Council. Mark served as the Education Director for the Secured Creditors Committee of the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) and was a member of the organization’s National Board of Directors. He served on ABI’s Executive Committee and was elected National Vice President of membership for ABI during the group’s 35th Annual Spring Meeting in April. Stingley was an adjunct professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law from 2007 to 2016, where he taught a course titled Debtor-Creditor Relations. He contributed to chapters in two Thomson West books, Strategic Alternatives for Distressed Businesses and Commercial Bankruptcy Litigation, and was Co-Editor of an ABI book on secured credit. Stingley was on the Board of the Turnaround Management Association, Missouri affiliate, from 2005-2015.

He was one of 130 professionals, academics and judges appointed nationally to one of the ten advisory committees reporting to the ABI’s Chapter 11 Reform Commission. Stingley also served annually as Co-Moderator of the ABI Midwestern Bankruptcy Institute from 1992 to 2014 and as an emeritus member of its planning committee. He also served on the drafting committee that wrote the newly implemented Missouri Commercial Receivership statute. Shortly after his passing, it was announced by Best Lawyers that Stingley had been named the 2018 Litigation-Bankruptcy “Lawyer of the Year” in Kansas City, MO.

More importantly, Stingley was a kind and thoughtful leader, both inside and outside the firm. His warm, upbeat personality and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on all those he touched in his accomplished career. Stingley is survived by his wife, Cyndi, and children Jeffrey, Erin and Kyle.
